Type of Tire
The starting letter on the tire sidewall represents the type of vehicle. For example, if the first letter is ‘P’, that stands for small traveling vehicles. And for pick-up trucks, it is mostly ‘LT’; means light traffic vehicle. If there is no such type of letter at the start, that represents small loading vehicles. These tires can also be used for passenger vehicles.
Now try to find 3 digits after the first letter, and there will be a rip mark after these letters. These numbers represent the width of the tire. Generally, manufacturing companies used to write these in Metrical system. And for example, if these digits are ‘250’, that means the width is 250 mm between the sidewalls.
Height To Width Ratio
Commonly known as aspect ratio that means percentage ratio of height to width. And numbers that represent these are just after the slash or rip mark. For example, if it is ‘LT250/65R15’, then 65 is the percentage of characteristic ratio from height to width.
Design Of Tire
After width digits, there lies an alphabetical letter showing which type of tire is. These letters can be of three types: B, R, or D.
B represents its construction as of belted type. Belted tires are framed in a diagonal style with added belts.
R type shows tire is of radial type. Radial-type tires have internal cords on the inner side.
D represents bias-ply tires. In these types of designs, diagonals cross each other at 30 or 45 degrees. These types of tires are very rare in use nowadays. And in this era, radial tires used to dominate the market.
Diameter Of Wheel
The last two digits show the diameter of the wheel. Their unit is mostly in inches and the larger the digits will be, the larger will be the diameter of the tire. You cannot replace every smaller tire with larger ones unless they are in a specific range. Otherwise, this makes the vehicle difficult to handle. If we take this as an example, ‘LT250/65R15’, then the diameter of the wheel is 15 inches.
